Postcard 1922 Festung Königstein Fortress Germany Saxon Switzerland Dated

Festung Königstein, Saxony, Germany1922Pre-linenGood

Perched at the sheer lip of an enormous sandstone mesa rising from the Elbe valley in Saxon Switzerland, the ancient fortress of Königstein presents one of military architecture's most dramatic marriages of natural and man-made fortification — the walls of the Festung simply continue the vertical face of the rock itself, hundreds of feet above the valley floor where the red rooftops of the village are just visible far below at left. This hand-colored early card focuses on the "Abratzkyfelsen," a notorious rock outcropping on the fortress face that, as the caption proudly notes, was first scaled by a chimney sweep in 1848 — an early act of what we would now call free soloing, performed in work clothes. On the back, in a precise German hand, someone has written: "Den 31.5.1922 / mit Herbert gesehen" — "Seen on 31 May 1922 / with Herbert" — a quietly human inscription that places two friends at this spectacular site in the tumultuous early Weimar Republic years, using a souvenir card as a personal diary entry rather than mailing it. The fortress's own circular souvenir cancel is applied to the back, and the publisher's monogram "RL" appears at the foot.
