Postcard 1915 Frankfurt Goethehaus Birthplace Goethe Portrait G.G.F.

Frankfurt am Main, Germany1915Pre-linenGood

A moody halftone view of the Goethehaus on the Großer Hirschgraben in Frankfurt am Main captures the multi-storey Baroque townhouse where Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born in 1749 — a medallion portrait of the great poet floats dramatically against the dark roofline at upper right, anchoring this commemorative composition. A lone figure in period dress pauses on the sun-dappled cobbles below, lending human scale to what would become one of Germany's most visited literary shrines. The card was printed by G.G.F. (Gebrüder Gerson, Frankfurt) and carries the publisher's series code IX 15, placing production circa 1910–1915; the undivided-to-divided-back transition style and blank reverse suggest it was kept as a souvenir rather than mailed. The Goethehaus was destroyed by Allied bombing in 1944 and meticulously reconstructed by 1951, making pre-war photographic views like this one genuine primary documents of the building's pre-war appearance.
