Postcard 1898 Nice France Jetée-Promenade Souvenir de Nice Used Germany

Nice, France1898Pre-linenFair-Good

Mailed on 14 January 1898 from Nice to Berlin, this atmospheric pioneer-era card shows the fantastical Jetée-Promenade — Nice's ornate cast-iron pleasure pier crowned with Moorish domes and minarets — mirrored in the still shallows at low tide, with sailboats drifting in the misty background. The pier, opened in 1891 and demolished in 1944, was one of the Belle Époque's great seaside spectacles, and cards depicting it are perennially sought by both French Riviera and Art Nouveau collectors. The handwritten message, addressed to "Liebe Jenny," asks her to kindly send the sender the address of the Mississippi newspaper — a charming window into the information networks of the 1890s. The card bears a French 10-centime Type Sage stamp (black on lavender) cancelled Nice / Alpes-Maritimes 14 JANV 98, with a Berlin Postamt 40 arrival cancel dated 17.1.98, making this a fully documented, postally-used pioneer card just three years into the modern postcard era.
