Antique & Vintage Postcards

Perched above Lake Geneva with a Swiss flag snapping in the alpine breeze, the grand Hôtel Château Belmont at Montreux once lured Edwardian and interwar travelers seeking that legendary "vue splendide sur le lac" — a splendid view over the water — scrawled in pencil on the back by a visitor who clearly felt the view spoke for itself. The hotel's mansard-roofed towers and multi-story balconied façade are captured here in a crisp real-photo postcard by A. Trüb & Co. of Aarau, one of Switzerland's premier early postcard publishers, whose gelatin-silver prints are prized for their tonal richness. Montreux, already famous as a resort for European elites and tuberculosis convalescents, made this Belle Époque palace one of its signature landmarks before it was later redeveloped. The penciled annotation "Waadt" (the German name for the canton of Vaud) and the catalog number "3" suggest this card was part of a collector's or dealer's sorted inventory rather than ever posted.
