Postcard 1920s Kruth Haut-Rhin Alsace Vosges France Village Real Photo

Kruth, Haut-Rhin, Alsace, France1925Pre-linenFair-Good

Nestled deep in the Vosges mountains of Alsace, the village of Kruth huddles around its church steeple in a valley so green and enclosed it seems to belong to another world — captured here in a brooding sepia real-photo view published by J. Kuntz of Soultz (Haut-Rhin), a small regional Alsatian publisher active in the interwar years when Alsace had just returned to France after the upheaval of World War I. The panoramic hilltop perspective reveals the compact medieval street plan of Kruth, the forested Vosges ridges rising steeply above, and the narrow river valley threading south — a landscape that, for Alsatian villagers of the 1920s, carried memories of German occupation and the fresh pride of repatriation. On the reverse, a handwritten message in what appears to be German-script (Kurrent or Sütterlin) speaks to the bilingual, bicultural reality of interwar Alsace. The sender, initialed "J.E." or similar, addresses someone by name — a personal communication in a region still finding its French identity. Card was posted, with a partial stamp impression visible in the upper right corner.
