Antique & Vintage Postcards

A cheerful blonde Wanderbursch — a roving lad in a Tyrolean hat, red waistcoat, lederhosen, and green stockings — strides through a sunlit Black Forest meadow, his rucksack topped with a tin canteen and his walking stick in hand, while a verse in flowing Kurrent-style script above him reads: "Als Wanderbursch, den Stab in der Hand / Streife ich froh durch das Schwarzwälder Land…" ("As a wandering lad, staff in hand, I roam happily through the Black Forest land…"). This illustrated souvenir card by Schöning & Co. of Lübeck (Bestell-Nr. Ruck 74) conceals a delightful accordion-fold leporello of miniature black-and-white photographic views that pull out from a pocket in the card's lower section: the Donauquelle fountain basin, the Donauquelle mit Schloß (the Baroque palace behind the spring), and further scenes of Donaueschingen — the market town where two small streams, the Brigach and Breg, officially form the source of the Danube. The back carries a German postal regulation note advising that cards with more than five words of text must be sent as printed matter in an envelope. Unused; pencilled inventory number "no. 539" at foot.
