Antique & Vintage Postcards

A hushed German village dissolves into winter in this luminous impressionist oil-reproduction postcard: a dark, ice-edged stream meanders through snow-blanketed meadows toward a cluster of half-timbered houses, their chimneys breathing pale smoke into a lavender-grey dusk sky, with a church steeple anchoring the right horizon. The palette — ochre lamplight in cottage windows, blue-white snow shadows, tobacco-brown willow scrub — belongs unmistakably to the German Stimmungslandschaft ("mood landscape") tradition practiced in Berlin at the turn of the century. The artist is identified on the back as R. Albitz, Berlin, with the title Winter überm Dorf ("Winter over the Village"), published by the NPG (Neue Photographische Gesellschaft, Steglitz-Berlin), one of Germany's most prestigious early postcard publishers, whose distinctive blocked-monogram logo appears on the back. Card number 619. Unused; wide white borders on the front suggest a slightly later printing within the NPG art series, possibly 1910–1920. The card is in fair-good condition with light surface toning and a small handling crease at lower left.
