Postcard 1910s Stralsund Schillstraße Germany Woodcut Art Settentin Unused

Stralsund, Germany1924Pre-linenGood

Bold as a woodblock and as atmospheric as a foggy Baltic evening, this striking pen-and-ink style art postcard captures Stralsund's cobblestoned Schillstraße — named for the Prussian officer Ferdinand von Schill — with shadowy figures dwarfed by the medieval gabled rooftops and a distant church spire piercing a cloud-streaked sky. The artist, whose name reads as Settentin in the lower-left corner of the image, employed a dense crosshatching technique that gives the composition the feel of an Expressionist woodcut, perfectly suited to this northern Hanseatic port city's ancient character. Published by Wilhelm Zemnick of Stralsund, this card belongs to a locally produced art series that celebrated the city's UNESCO-worthy Brick Gothic streetscapes well before anyone called them that. The back notes a dealer pencil price and catalog reference suggesting early collector acquisition.
