Antique & Vintage Postcards

Twin electric trams clatter past an ornate Wilhelmine opera house on a bright Cologne afternoon — this vivid chromolithograph captures the German Empire's civic confidence at its peak, when cities like Köln were dressing their public squares in Historicist grandeur and lacing their streets with modern transit. The building depicted is the Cologne Opera House (Oper Köln) on the Rudolfplatz area, its domed pavilions and arched colonnades gleaming white against a pastel sky, with pedestrians in long skirts and frock coats animating the foreground. Part of the same "Greetings from Cologne!" embossed export series as PC-04951, this companion card (no. 31507) was produced by the same HWK publisher and shares the same bold embossed letterform style — suggesting both were sold together as a tourist set. The back is entirely blank and unused, with only a dealer pencil price of £1.
