Two Edwardian ladies pause beneath the ancient Romanesque porch of St. Emmeram's in Regensburg — one of Bavaria's oldest and most venerable abbey churches, whose origins reach back to the 7th century — in this beautifully observed early photographic postcard that captures both monumental architecture and the elegantly dressed visitors who gave it human scale. Above the twin arches, a weathered tympanum relief depicts scenes from the life of St. Emmeram, the Frankish bishop martyred here around 652 AD, its carved figures softened by a millennium of Bavarian winters. The garden setting — overgrown hedges, dappled light through deciduous trees — lends the image an almost Pictorialist quality, as though the photographer lingered to find the perfect composition rather than simply document. Published again by the esteemed Gebrüder Metz of Tübingen (catalog no. 42760), this card pairs beautifully with PC-04954 as a companion Metz Bavaria piece.
