Postcard 1930s Alpine Flowers Edelweiss Switzerland Alpenblumen Photo Art

Adelboden, Bern, Switzerland1935Pre-linenGood

A jewel-box riot of Alpine color bursts from this exquisite Swiss photographic art card — edelweiss stars gleaming white against forget-me-not blue, primrose yellow, magenta alpine aster, and deep gentian, all photographed in close-up with the lush saturation that made Swiss nature cards the envy of the postcard world between the wars. The edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum), with its distinctive felted petals, takes center stage twice — a flower so iconic in Swiss identity that it was already legally protected in many cantons by the time this card was printed. Published by Tho. E. Gyger of Adelboden — one of Switzerland's most celebrated early color photographers and postcard publishers — and printed in Switzerland to the exacting standards the house was known for, this card (no. 1318) represents the high-water mark of Alpine nature postcard art.
