Postcard 1950s Tijuana Baja California Mexico Main Street Revolucion Linen

Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico1950LinenFair-Good

Avenida Revolución stretches wide and sun-drenched into the hazy Baja hills — lined with hand-colored late-1930s/early-1940s American automobiles parked bumper to bumper outside shops with names like "Silks," "French Perfumes," and the neon-bright arcade of a dance hall — in this vibrant linen-era chrome-transition view of Tijuana's famous main drag, mailed to Mr. E.H. in Rochester, New York. The hand-tinted coloring gives the scene an almost painterly warmth, the storefronts a carnival of competing signs competing for the attention of American day-trippers just across the border. The sender — signing simply as "Norma" — keeps it brief and breezy: "Having a nice time. Looking around. Warm in that." The postcard's publisher credit, Hester Colorgraphic Studio of San Diego, places production firmly in the immediate postwar era, when San Diego studios supplied the Tijuana tourist trade. A 6¢ Mexican stamp (Monumento Guadalajara) pays the airmail rate. Condition shows foxing spots on the image face but strong color overall.
