Postcard 1947 Linen Popocatepetl Volcano Amecameca Mexico Curteich

Amecameca, Estado de México, Mexico1947LinenGood

A linen-era traveler named Lil sent this vivid view of Popocatepetl's rust-ochre cone rising above a lush valley to "the Gang" back in Rochester, N.Y. — and her breezy 1947 dispatch captures the golden age of American tourism in postwar Mexico perfectly. Photographed by William Berlin Goolsby and rendered in Curteich's signature saturated linen palette, the card frames the 17,802-foot stratovolcano through a curtain of cypress and Spanish-moss-draped trees above the valley floor near Amecameca, Estado de México. Lil's message mixes a little Spanish ("Buenos dias, ¿cómo está usted?") with Midwestern enthusiasm: she and her companions had already "conquered Mexico City" and had only one more day before departing for Monterrey, signing off with "Hasta la vista." The Curteich "Art-Colortone" linen process gave the card's greens and terra-cottas an almost painterly warmth that chrome cards would never quite replicate.
