Antique & Vintage Postcards

The ornate Colonial Fountain of Chapultepec Park commands the foreground of this rich linen-era card, its baroque stone relief figures and gilded lamp finials contrasting with the pale neoclassical bulk of Chapultepec Castle rising through the ahuehuete trees above — a tiny figure of a child standing at the fountain's base gives breathtaking scale to the whole composition. Distributed by Sociedad Mexicana de Publicaciones on 5 de Mayo 46, Mexico City, and printed in the USA, the card exemplifies the cross-border publishing partnerships common in mid-century Mexican tourism. The reverse carries a bilingual description noting the structure's modern construction preserving colonial Mexican architectural tradition, its harmonious lines, and the appealing rose-colored tezontle volcanic stone from which it is built — calling it "one of the most interesting monuments of the City." This example is unused and unaddressed, retaining its bright linen colors without postal wear.
