Antique & Vintage Postcards

A mossy stone cross rising from El Sacromonte hill in Amecameca frames a breathtaking chrome-era photograph of snow-capped Popocatepetl — at 17,800 feet one of Mexico's highest peaks — its perfect volcanic cone gleaming white above golden-brown foothills and a small village spread across the valley below, a composition that has made this one of the most iconic postcard views in all of Mexico. Charlott and Bob mailed this card from Cholula (near Puebla) in March 1973, telling their friend "Gen" about staying with "a friend of Kim's" who was showing them around and helping them understand Mexico deeply — planning to visit Mexico City on Monday and Tuesday, then hike up "Popo" on Wednesday. The card's reverse caption identifies the scene precisely: "El Volcán Popocatepetl desde El Sacromonte" — a view that was already a classic when Charlott and Bob found it in a Cholula shop.
