Edwardian Cardiff comes alive in this hand-coloured German-printed gem: ladies in long white dresses promenade along Newport Road while a double-decker tram rumbles past iron-railed garden walls and leafy chestnut trees, the whole scene bathed in the unhurried golden light of a summer afternoon circa 1905. Newport Road was — and remains — one of Cardiff's principal arteries, stretching east from the city centre toward the docks that fuelled the Welsh coal boom; this card catches it at its most genteel, before the motor car changed everything. The card was never mailed and retains a clean, unused back, making it a particularly crisp example of the Edwardian divided-back format printed in Germany for the British market — a practice that ended abruptly with World War I.
