Postcard c1904 Combe Martin Bay Hangman Ilfracombe Devon England Pre-Linen RPPC

Combe Martin, Devon, England, United Kingdom1903Pre-linenGood

Soft blush and sage wash across this early photographic view of Combe Martin Bay, where the brooding headland of Great Hangman — England's highest sea cliff at 318 metres — shoulders into the Bristol Channel in a scene of sublime North Devon solitude, published by the local Twiss Brothers of Ilfracombe's Arcade around the turn of the twentieth century. The card's undivided-era back (address only, no message space), inland postage rate of ½d, and "Printed in Belgium" imprint place it firmly in the 1902–1904 transitional window — among the earliest picture postcards permitted to carry a divided back in Britain. Combe Martin, a village strung along what claims to be England's longest main street, drew Victorian and Edwardian tourists hiking the coastal path to gaze down at Hangman Point; this card was their souvenir.
