Postcard 1928 Florence Italy Cimabue Madonna RPPC Chiesa S.M. Novella

Florence, Italy1928Pre-linenGood

A sepia-toned photographic reproduction card carries the gravitas of medieval devotion — Cimabue's monumental Madonna in Maestà gazes down from her golden throne, flanked by a celestial court of angels, just as she has in the Chiesa di Santa Maria Novella since the late 13th century. This card left Florence in June 1928, stamped with the promotional cachet of the Terza Fiera Internazionale del Libro — an international book fair that electrified the city's cultural scene — and traveled to a Harold at the New York School of Fine and Applied Art's Paris address on the storied Place des Vosges. The sender, a witty traveler named Curran, couldn't resist a postscript: upon returning to New York, he planned to "inaugurate the custom of walking up Fifth Avenue with a Madonna lily in one hand and a candle in the other." The card is numbered 268 in the publisher's series and captures the pre-linen era's love of fine-art reproduction for the educated tourist market.
