Antique & Vintage Postcards

Lush palm fronds arch toward a magnificent stained-glass dome in this sumptuous color-photograph card of the Wintergarten at Wiesbaden's grand Palast-Hotel — a Belle Époque sanctuary of wicker chairs, floral cushions, and golden tablecloths that spoke to the resort city's enduring prestige as a European spa destination. Dated by hand 19 April 1919, this card was acquired just months after the Armistice, when Wiesbaden had become headquarters of the French Army of Occupation on the Rhine — lending the tranquil, almost defiant elegance of the Wintergarten scene a quietly charged historical resonance. The card was produced using the early Farben-Photographie (color photography) process by the celebrated Leipzig firm of Adolf Klauß, pioneers of chromolithographic postcard printing in Germany. It was never mailed — the address side bears only the handwritten date and an initial, making it a personal keepsake or album card from a remarkable moment in European history.
