Antique & Vintage Postcards

Sun-drenched hibiscus and towering fan palms frame the mission-revival entrance of the legendary Hotel Agua Caliente in this vivid linen-era card — a glamorous relic of Tijuana's golden age when Hollywood stars, bootleggers, and high-rollers crossed the border to gamble, race horses, and soak in the mineral springs of this fabled resort that straddled the line between Prohibition-era escape and Mexican luxury. Mailed from Tijuana in May 1939 — when the hotel was in its final years of operation before President Cárdenas nationalized gambling — the card traveled to a Earl at 53 Mammoth Road in Manchester, New Hampshire, from a sender who noted simply and warmly: "Dear Earl, Thought I would drop a bit. Nice time. Ma." The Western Publishing & Novelty Co. of Los Angeles produced the card, and it retains a Mexican postage stamp cancelled at Tijuana — a tactile thread connecting us to one of the most storied pleasure palaces of the 20th-century American borderlands.
