Antique & Vintage Postcards

Stone arches stretch into the shadowed distance of a Renaissance arcade at Schloss Lackenbach, a moated palace in Burgenland, Austria — this crisp real-photo postcard captures the elegant columned loggia of the inner courtyard (Arkadenhof), its vaulted ceiling and slender pillars framing a glimpse of the opposing gallery draped in summer foliage. Lackenbach was among the great Esterházy family estates, and by the mid-20th century the castle had witnessed centuries of Habsburg intrigue; the peaceful geometry of its arcades belies a turbulent past. Sent by a traveller — possibly named in the hand-written message referencing "Leopolds" — to a recipient named Max in Vienna's 5th district, Margareten, the card carries an Austrian 30-Groschen stamp and was posted in the early 1950s.
