Antique & Vintage Postcards

A bird's-eye panorama of Vienna's beloved Augarten sweeps across this hand-colored pre-linen card, the baroque park gate glowing pale blue-grey at center while chestnut allées fan out toward the Leopoldstadt rooftops beyond — a city still flush with imperial confidence in the last years of Franz Joseph's reign. The Augarten, oldest public park in Vienna (opened 1775), was a place of Sunday promenades and outdoor concerts; here it looks pristine and unhurried, the broad gravel forecourt empty save for a handful of tiny strolling figures. On the divided back, a sender identified only as a first name addresses a "Schwägerin" (sister-in-law) in what appears to be a Moravian town, mentioning an uncle named Onkel Franzilka and giving a return address in Vienna XVIII, Leukamgasse 35 — a glimpse of the tight family networks threading across the old Habsburg lands. The card carries a 5-Heller Franz-Joseph stamp and the publisher code B.K.W.I. 105-14, placing printing firmly in the 1910–1914 window.
