Postcard 1978 NC&StL Locomotive No 576 Centennial Park Nashville TN Chrome

Nashville, Tennessee, USA1978ChromeGood

Massive and brooding behind a chain-link fence, NC&StL (Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Railway) steam locomotive No. 576 dominates this chrome-era postcard shot at Centennial Park in Nashville, Tennessee — its streamlined black boiler and 70-inch drive wheels silhouetted against a brilliant autumn canopy of orange and gold, a monument to the age of steam preserved in a city park. Built in 1942, No. 576 weighed 68,550 lbs. and stretched 100 feet, making it one of the last great steam engines of a railroad absorbed by L&N in 1957. The card was mailed from Charleston, Missouri in July 1978 by someone named "Tonya" and "Miles" to a "Mom" — Ray — at 320 Yucca, Fort Worth, Texas, with a cheerful note: "Hi Mom. Do you like your U.N. stamps. I have some more for you." A 10-cent Jefferson Memorial "We Hold These Truths" stamp (Scott #1510 or similar) pays the period postage.
