Antique & Vintage Postcards

A lone figure in white breeches and dark military coat stands silently before a stone sarcophagus in a vaulted crypt — Napoleon Bonaparte at the tomb of Frederick the Great in Potsdam, 1806, rendered in brooding sepia by painter Ponce Camus and here reproduced as a museum postcard from the Musée de Versailles. The scene, suffused with the Romantic cult of the heroic dead, shows ghostly courtiers dissolving into the shadows as Napoleon pays tribute to the Prussian king he so admired; legend holds he told his generals, "If he were alive, we would not be here." Published by the celebrated Lévy et fils (LL) house in Paris, this undivided or early-divided back card is unused and in fine condition, printed for the Union Postale Universelle market in six languages including Russian.
