Antique & Vintage Postcards

Perched above the glittering Baie des Anges, this moonlit-toned lithographic panorama of Nice sweeps from rocky headland to tiled rooftops, sailboats dotting the calm harbor below — one of the earliest picture postcards of the French Riviera, mailed in January 1898 from Nice's railway station post office to a young woman named Jenny in Berlin. The delicate undivided-back card predates the postcard golden age by years, yet already captures the allure that drew European society to the Côte d'Azur. Written in German cursive, the sender — whose name is not fully legible — tells Jenny they are sending "the last greeting from here; tomorrow I'll be in Genoa," closing with warm regards to "alle Brüdern" (all the brothers). Postmarked Gare de Nice, 19 January 1898, and received in Berlin on 21 January 1898.
