Antique & Vintage Postcards

Venus, goddess of love, descends from the clouds in a gilded chariot while courtiers feast and musicians play in a lush garden — this extraordinary postcard reproduces a 16th-century Brussels tapestry hanging in the Salle du Conseil at the Château de Chaumont-sur-Loire, one of the great Loire Valley châteaux associated with Catherine de Medici and Diane de Poitiers. The scene brims with Renaissance fantasy: cupids in flight, elegantly dressed nobles, and the green tangle of a walled garden, all rendered in the intricate woven detail that made Flemish tapestry the prestige art of its era. Published by Lévy et fils (LL) of Paris as card no. 89 in their Chaumont series, this unused card dates to the early 1900s when château tourism was booming and Lévy's photographic reproductions made art history accessible by post.
