Steam billows from the ancient Kochbrunnen hot spring in Wiesbaden as two uniformed attendants — one carrying a tray of glass cups, the other filling pitchers directly from the source — go about their elegant therapeutic ritual in this striking real-photograph postcard from the interwar era. The Kochbrunnenquelle, at 66°C the hottest of Wiesbaden's famed 26 natural springs, had been serving health-seekers since Roman times; by the 1930s it operated from a grand neoclassical hall featuring Ionic marble columns and ornate leaded-glass windows, glimpsed here in the background. The two attendants, dressed in white uniforms and caps in the fashion of the late Weimar / early Third Reich period, bring an intimate human warmth to what might otherwise be a purely architectural image. Published by H. Rinke of Kochbrunnen, Wiesbaden, catalog number D 53; the card is unused, with deckled edges typical of the era.
