Postcard 1976 Eltville Rheingau Regina im Weinberg Vineyard Madonna Chrome

Eltville im Rheingau, Germany1976ChromeExcellent

Bathed in the golden light of a Rheingau summer, a carved sandstone Madonna and Child — known locally as the "Regina im Weinberg," Queen of the Vineyard — presides serenely over rows of ripening Riesling vines in Eltville am Rhein, the rose-scented wine capital of the Rheingau. The baroque-style statue, its crown glinting white against a blue sky streaked with cloud, stands on an ornate pedestal amid a border of bright wildflowers; the vineyards stretching to the horizon are the same slopes that have produced some of Germany's most celebrated white wines since the Cistercian monks of Kloster Eberbach tended them in the Middle Ages. This unused chrome-era color card, published by Cekade (series VCJ) and photographed by Ph. Schott KG of Eltville, carries the production code Elti 03 76/125, confirming a 1976 print run. It captures a subject deeply embedded in Rhineland Catholic devotion and wine-country identity — a Madonna standing watch over the harvest.
