Postcard 1902 Eaton Hall Entrance Gates Chester England UDB C.W. Faulkner

Chester, England1901Pre-linenGood

Iron gates and Gothic spires rise dramatically against a pale Edwardian sky in this atmospheric sepia view of Eaton Hall, the magnificent Cheshire seat of the Duke of Westminster — one of England's grandest Victorian Gothic Revival palaces, designed by Alfred Waterhouse and completed in 1882. The sweeping gravel forecourt, ornate clock tower at left, and richly decorated gatehouse facade convey the sheer theatrical ambition of the estate, which at the time was considered the largest private house in England. Published by C.W. Faulkner & Co. of London EC in their early undivided-back series, this card dates to the very first years of the picture postcard era in Britain, before the 1902 Post Office regulation that permitted divided backs — making it a genuine pioneer of the format.
