Antique & Vintage Postcards

Rising from the canyon rim like something conjured from a Pueblo elder's dream, the Desert View Watchtower stands sentinel against a cloudswept Arizona sky in this richly colored Fred Harvey linen card — the tower's rough-cut stone walls seemingly grown from the very canyon below. Designed by architect Mary Colter and completed in 1932, the Watchtower was built for the Fred Harvey Company as a romanticized tribute to ancestral Puebloan architecture, deliberately aged and weathered in appearance to evoke the prehistoric structures of the Colorado Plateau. Mary's genius was to let the natural Canyon stone dictate the masonry's character — a philosophy spelled out verbatim on the back of this very card. A rare case where the postcard text itself is as historically significant as the image.
