Postcard Paimpol Ruins Abbaye de Beauport Brittany France Pre-Linen c1905

Paimpol, Brittany, France1905Pre-linenFair-Good

Gothic arches open to the sky like a roofless cathedral reclaimed by ivy and silence — this haunting real-photograph collotype card shows the medieval ruins of the Abbaye de Beauport near Paimpol, Brittany, its great lancet windows now framing nothing but clouds and overgrown hedgerow. Founded by Premonstratensian monks in 1202, Beauport Abbey was suppressed during the French Revolution, stripped of its roof, and left to the slow theatre of ruin — a subject irresistible to the postcard photographers who fanned across provincial France in the early 1900s capturing picturesque decay for the boom years of the picture postcard. Published by phototypie specialist A. Bruel of Angers, a prolific producer of high-quality collotype cards for the regional French market, this unused card likely dates to the pre-WWI golden age of French cartophilie.
