Antique & Vintage Postcards

Horse-drawn carriages clatter along a street still unmarked by motor cars as Westminster Abbey dominates this gorgeous Edwardian-era chromolithograph — its twin Gothic towers soaring above a London frozen in the last years of Victoria or the early reign of Edward VII, the postcard itself a window into a city that would be unrecognizable within a generation. Printed in Prussia, as so many of the finest British souvenir cards were before the Great War severed that commercial relationship, this undivided-back card by H.M. & Co. belongs to the undivided-back era (pre-1902 in Britain), making it among the earliest generation of picture postcards. The stamp box notation — "Inland ½d / Abroad 1d" — precisely echoes the British postcard postage rates that prevailed from 1897, a useful dating anchor. A lovely survivor from the Edwardian golden age of chromolithography.
