Postcard 1942 Linen Bull Fight Mexico San Antonio TX Cancel Grandma to Allen

San Antonio, Texas, USA (mailed from); Mexico (depicted)1942LinenGood

Vivid and visceral, this linen-era postcard pulls no punches: a white bull — bleeding, ribboned with banderillas — charges a brilliantly costumed matador in gold and yellow, the red muleta sweeping dramatically across the spotlit sand of a Mexican bullring. Published by Gardner's Studio under the Curteich "C.T. Art-Colortone" linen process, the card radiates the warm, saturated palette that defines the golden age of American linen printing. A grandmother writes to young "Master Allen" in Rochester, New York — apparently a child, given the "Master" honorific — describing San Antonio as a "fine place" and noting the matador's stunning performance in the ring, signing off with love. The San Antonio, TX postmark dates this to May 24, 1942, deep in the WWII home-front era, when cross-border tourism imagery still offered exotic escapism.
