Antique & Vintage Postcards

Cobblestones recede into the misty distance beneath a row of half-timbered facades as the Markusturm — Rothenburg ob der Tauber's 13th-century Röder Gate tower — anchors the far end of the Rödergasse in this evocative, sepia-toned copperplate-print postcard. A stone well-trough anchors the right foreground; figures in period dress are barely visible in the lane. Rothenburg ob der Tauber, arguably Germany's most perfectly preserved medieval walled city, was a major stop on the German Romantic Road and a pilgrimage destination for Heimat-nostalgic travelers of the Weimar era. Produced as a genuine Kupfertiefdruck (copperplate intaglio) card — a premium printing process — by the Kunstverlagsanstalt Bruno Hansmann of Cassel, this unused specimen represents the finest photographic postcard printing technology of its day.
