Postcard 1960s Chrome Teatro Degollado Plaza Guadalajara Jalisco Mexico

Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico1963ChromeExcellent

Red-flowering flamboyán trees blaze against the neoclassical severity of the Teatro Degollado — Guadalajara's grand opera house — its Doric colonnade and sculpted pediment commanding the plaza as a fountain catches afternoon light and pedestrians stroll among manicured gardens in this glorious chrome-era bird's-eye view. Completed in 1866 after nearly four decades of construction interrupted by wars and coups, the Degollado (named for reformist general Santos Degollado) became the cultural soul of Mexico's second city, its interior ceiling famously painted with a scene from Dante's Divine Comedy. The flanking Palacio Municipal is visible at left, its colonial arcade anchoring the urban composition. This card, like the Callejón del Beso example in this batch, was distributed by Casa Valadez in Guanajuato — an interesting detail suggesting a regional distributor supplying cards of multiple Jalisco and Bajío destinations. The vivid blooming trees, the fountain spray, and the neoclassical grandeur make this among the more picturesque architectural chrome cards of the era.
