Antique & Vintage Postcards

A young girl — perhaps eight years old, her curly hair tumbling beneath a wide-brimmed cowgirl hat, a decorative bandolier of studs crossing her dress bodice — sits proudly atop a stout black-and-white Shetland pony in front of a clapboard house, a wreath-hung door just visible behind her, the whole scene rendered in the rich silver tones of a real-photo postcard from the early twentieth century. Her dress features a printed panel depicting a rearing horse, a charming layering of equestrian iconography that suggests this was a special occasion — perhaps a traveling pony photographer who made the rounds of residential neighborhoods, offering families a keepsake portrait for a few coins. The pony's bridle is fitted with a small name plate, just legible enough to hint at the animal's identity. The image is beautifully composed and sharply focused, with excellent tonal range, and the card stock shows the characteristic matte surface of pre-1920 RPPC production. The reverse is blank — never addressed or mailed — preserving both surfaces in fine condition. This type of itinerant pony-portrait postcard is a beloved subcategory of RPPC collecting, evoking the small pleasures of early American childhood.
