Postcard 1920s Umbrella Rock Lookout Mountain Chattanooga TN Linen D.R. Weill

Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA1930LinenGood

Balanced improbably atop a narrow stone pillar high above a sweeping oxbow bend in the Tennessee River, Umbrella Rock on Lookout Mountain stands as one of Chattanooga's most enduring geological curiosities — and this vivid linen-era postcard, published by D. R. Weill Co. of Chattanooga, captures it with the characteristic saturated sky blues and warm ochre earth tones that defined the American linen postcard's golden age. A wooden ladder leans against the formation's base, inviting visitors to climb up for the panoramic view of the surrounding valley described on the reverse: "a wonderful view of the surrounding country is seen." Bronze memorial plaques are visible at the rock's base, and the winding river valley stretches dreamily into the distance. Lookout Mountain was a major Civil War battlefield site (Battle Above the Clouds, 1863) and a popular tourist destination by the 1920s–1940s, served by the famous Incline Railway. The card is unused and unaddressed, with clean borders and good color saturation, though minor edge toning is present. D. R. Weill Co. was a local Chattanooga publisher whose cards are sought by Tennessee and Civil War site collectors.
