Antique & Vintage Postcards

Three bird's-eye panoramas capture Mariazell in its Alpine glory — Austria's most beloved Catholic pilgrimage destination nestled among the green Styrian heights, its Gothic-Baroque basilica spire piercing the skyline in every frame. The hand-coloured triptych moves from a lush summer overview dotted with red-roofed townhouses, to a mid-distance view where the twin towers of the Basilica of the Birth of the Virgin dominate, to a closer study showing the great dome and surrounding monastery complex with the Bürgeralpe rising behind — a view little changed today from when this card was mailed. The postmark, stamped "MARIAZELL 22.VII.75," records a July day when a sender — name partially legible as beginning with a flowing Germanic script — wrote to a family in what appears to be a Niederösterreich (Lower Austria) address, perhaps a relative making the traditional Wallfahrt (pilgrimage) to the miraculous Madonna. The publisher imprint of Franz Scherm Kunstanstalt, Nürnberg places production squarely in the pre-WWI German commercial printing tradition for Austrian tourist markets.
