Antique & Vintage Postcards

A sweeping real-photo panorama of Mt Conobolas rising above the fertile orchards and paddocks west of Orange, New South Wales — the ancient shield volcano's rounded twin summits unmistakable against a pale Australian sky, its slopes cloaked in scrub and its foothills quilted with the apple and cherry plantings that made Orange famous. This crisp Valentine's RPPC — code "V7" places it firmly in the early-to-mid 1950s Valentine's numbering system — was airlifted halfway around the world, its blue Par Avion label and Australian kangaroo stamp carrying it from Bathurst post office to Mr. and Mrs. F. Kirchner at Felberstraße 104, Vienna XV, Austria. The message, written in confident German cursive by someone who signs with what appears to be "Nepi," speaks of people and places — a remarkable social document of postwar Austrian emigrant or tourist correspondence flowing between the Central Western Tablelands and the rebuilt streets of Vienna. The 7d kangaroo definitive stamp is a lovely period touch, its circular Bathurst cancel still clearly legible.
