Few interiors in the American West rival the Old Faithful Inn's lobby for sheer architectural drama, and this Haynes white-border card captures it perfectly: the colossal rhyolite fireplace — said to consume five hundred pounds of wood per day during peak season — dominates the left frame while the multi-story log-and-pole balconies recede into the warm, smoky heights above. Visitors in wicker rockers cluster near the hearth, their postures suggesting the particular contentment of travelers who have just watched the world's most famous geyser perform on cue. Designed by Robert Reamer and opened in 1904, the Inn is now a National Historic Landmark, and early interior postcards like this one serve as irreplaceable visual records of its original furnishings and atmosphere.
