Antique & Vintage Postcards

Gleaming yellow clapboard beneath a terracotta hip roof, the Lake Hotel's colonnaded porte-cochère frames a stagecoach that has just delivered its passengers — a vivid reminder that when J. E. Haynes photographed this scene, horse-drawn coaches and early motor cars shared the dusty loop roads of Yellowstone in colorful competition. Built in 1891 and extensively remodeled in the Colonial Revival style by architect Robert Reamer around 1903, the Lake Hotel on the shores of Yellowstone Lake is today the oldest operating hotel in any U.S. national park, making this early exterior view a document of lasting historical importance. Haynes, whose family held the official park photography concession for generations, produced this card in his characteristic white-border style, and the color rendering — cerulean sky, rich ochre siding, bright white columns — remains exceptionally fresh on this unused example.
