Postcard 1907 Snow Plow Continental Divide Railroad Steam Train Undivided Back

Continental Divide, USA (Rocky Mountains)1907Pre-linenGood

A wall of white erupts from a rotary snowplow as it bores through mountain drifts on the Continental Divide — one of the most kinetic images the Edwardian postcard era ever produced, capturing in hand-tinted color the raw contest between steam power and winter in the high Rockies. The red-painted plow car and its pusher locomotive send a geyser of snow arcing far above the cut, while the cleared rails gleam in cold sunlight below — a scene that thrilled eastern parlor audiences who had never seen such machinery at work. Rotary snowplows of this period were operated by railroads including the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific across mountain passes, and views of them in full operation were eagerly collected by early deltiologists. The undivided back and ornate script "Post Card" typography date this card to the pre-1907 / transitional period, and the domestic one-cent / foreign two-cent stamp notice further pins it to that early window.
