Antique & Vintage Postcards

Captured in a pristine real-photo close-up by the celebrated Cairo studio of Lehnert & Landrock, this striking image presents the monumental limestone Statue of the Priest Ranofer — a masterwork of Old Kingdom Egyptian sculpture from the Fifth Dynasty (c. 2465–2323 BCE) — standing over two meters tall in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo, his striding pose and pleated kilt as commanding today as when he served the pharaoh's temple. Lehnert & Landrock, the premier archaeological and ethnographic photo-postcard publisher of early 20th-century Egypt, produced their cards on premium silver gelatin paper with exceptional tonal range, and this example (numbered 714) is no exception: the limestone's subtle texture, Ranofer's enigmatic carved face, and the backing slab's surface are rendered with documentary precision. An important artifact of early Egyptology tourism and a genuinely handsome RPPC for the Egypt or museum-art collector.
