Postcard 1973 Chrome Catemaco Lagoon Sunset Puerto Juarez Quintana Roo Mexico

Catemaco, Veracruz / mailed from Puerto Juarez, Quintana Roo, Mexico1973ChromeGood

A molten sun melts into Laguna Catemaco as silhouetted tropical trees frame the golden water in this lush Chrome-era photograph — mailed Tuesday, February 27th from Puerto Juarez, Quintana Roo, by a couple who had so thoroughly fallen for Mexico's Caribbean coast that they'd slowed down and spent nearly a week in one spot. The card depicts Hermoso Atardecer sobre la Laguna Catemaco (Beautiful Sunset over Catemaco Lagoon, Veracruz), though the writers confess they are writing from up the coast near what would become the Cancún resort strip — then barely developed — where they spent their days skin diving, body surfing, hammock-lounging, and walking white sandy beaches fringed with coconut palms. The photograph, credited to Tomás Saldaña, captures the hazy mountains across the lake and the warm amber reflection that made the sender rank it "the second most beautiful place we've been." Sent via Correo Aéreo (airmail) to Mrs. Edgar Bockes of Fairport, New York, postmarked and dated in pencil 3/13/73, the card carries an 80-centavo Mexican airmail stamp and a charming handwritten travelogue that evokes the pre-resort Caribbean Mexico that most tourists never knew.
