Headlights streak like molten gold past the gleaming white marble dome of Mexico City's Palacio de Bellas Artes in a dramatic long-exposure night shot — and the writer, Ann, was about to walk through those very doors to see the legendary Ballet Folklórico, including "Aztec Ritual Dances," which she describes with an exclamatory "WOW." The Palacio de Bellas Artes, completed in 1934 after a 30-year construction saga that saw the building slowly sink into Mexico City's ancient lakebed, is one of the hemisphere's great cultural monuments — its Art Nouveau exterior paired with a Art Deco interior housing Rivera, Orozco, and Siqueiros murals. This Chrome-era card captures the building at its atmospheric best: palm trees illuminated in amber, traffic light trails curving along Avenida Juárez, and the copper-tiled dome glowing against a dark sky. Ann mailed this to Peggy in Waterbury, Connecticut, on a Mexico 1968 Olympics commemorative 80-centavo airmail stamp — one of the most iconic Mexican philatelic issues ever produced, showing sailboats in Olympic blue — making this a particularly appealing philatelic and cultural artifact of late-1960s Mexico City.
