Postcard c1910 RPPC John Knox's House High Street Edinburgh Scotland Real Photo

Edinburgh, Scotland1908RPPCFair-Good

The ancient stones of Edinburgh's Royal Mile hold their breath in this atmospheric real-photograph postcard — John Knox's House, that improbable 15th-century survivor jutting its timber gallery over the High Street, anchors a scene of Edwardian everyday life: a woman in long skirts crosses at the corner below, a horse-drawn vehicle disappears around the bend, shopfronts with awnings crowd the narrow close, and gothic spires of the adjacent Moubray House spike the grey Scottish sky. The sepia-toned real photograph gives the image a luminous, almost three-dimensional quality that printed halftone cards of the period could never match. John Knox — the firebrand Protestant reformer who tradition holds lived here in the 1560s during Mary Queen of Scots' tumultuous reign — would become one of Edinburgh's most enduring tourist draws, and this card captures the building in its pre-motor-car streetscape, with pedestrian life still scaling those distinctive external stone staircases. The card's reverse notes "This is a real photograph," a marketing assurance publishers added to distinguish RPPC cards from cheaper lithographic competition.
