Postcard c1910 Valentine's Valesque Twa Brigs Ayr Scotland Burns Country

Ayr, Scotland1910Pre-linenGood

Two graceful stone bridges arc over the River Ayr in this richly tinted Edwardian postcard — the sturdy New Bridge of 1788 sweeping across the foreground with its elegant lamp standards, and the ancient Auld Brig of Ayr, dating to the 13th century, visible behind it in quieter silhouette, while the spire of the Auld Kirk of Ayr punctuates the skyline to the right. Robert Burns immortalised this very pairing in his 1791 poem "The Brigs of Ayr," in which the two bridges argue animatedly about their merits and longevity — giving this view a literary resonance that made it one of the most reproduced postcard subjects in all of Burns Country. The Valentine's "Valesque" series printing process, a registered photochrome technique, gives the stonework a warm honey glow and the river's surface a pewter sheen that captures the Scottish light with surprising fidelity. Horse-drawn transport and Edwardian-dressed pedestrians animate the riverside quay.
