Postcard 1955 Piccadilly Circus London Chrome Airmail Sent NY Guinness Ad

London, England1955ChromeFair-Good

Neon and advertisement hoardings blaze across a vivid mid-century colour view of Piccadilly Circus — "Guinness Is Good For You," Bovril, Schweppes Tonic Water, Wrigley's "For Vim and Vigour," Gordon's Gin, and Votrix Vermouth compete for the eye while a scarlet AEC Regent double-decker swings past the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain. The film posters (including Jassy) and the sleek 1930s–40s motor cars help pin the photograph to the late 1940s–early 1950s, yet the card was mailed 30 September (year visible on postmark — London W, 12:45 PM, 30 SEP) via Airmail to Jesse James, care of Charles, at the Lombardy Hotel, Madison Ave & 56th St, New York, N.Y. — a stylish Midtown address that still operates today. The sender, signing as what reads like "Ralph," fills the entire correspondence panel with cheerful holiday notes about England, adding a "CIVIL DEFENCE" slogan cancel stamp in purple that speaks to early Cold War civic messaging.
