Postcard 1902 London Piccadilly Circus Spaten Beer Eros Undivided Back Color

London, England1903Pre-linenGood

Horse-drawn hansoms and open carriages wheel around the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain — Eros gleaming gold above its tiered base — in this rare early Edwardian colour-litho of Piccadilly Circus captured before the motor age transformed it. The dominant building at left is a grand colonnaded restaurant boldly signed Spaten Beer on its roofline and balustrade, the famous Munich brewery's London outpost that operated here around the turn of the century. The scene is wonderfully pre-electric: no neon, no motor cars, just top-hatted pedestrians, livered coachmen, and the clatter of iron wheels on stone setts. The undivided back with its ½d inland / 1d foreign stamp instructions dates the card firmly to the pre-1902 or very early divided-back era (c.1900–1904), making it one of the earliest London Piccadilly cards in circulation. Numbered 211, unused, and priced by a collector at $4 (pencil, "U-300").
