Postcard 1910s Chrome Lago di Como Lenno Balbianello Italy Villa Steps Boat

Lenno, Lake Como, Italy1912Pre-linenFair-Good

A slim wooden boat with a furled yellow canopy rests at the foot of moss-edged stone steps, water so still it mirrors the ornate balustrade curving up toward the terraced gardens of Villa del Balbianello — one of Lake Como's most theatrical landscapes, perched on a narrow wooded promontory above the Lenno shore. The hand-colored printing gives the autumn foliage a blazing amber warmth, setting the baroque staircase in relief against a brooding mountain backdrop across the water. Villa del Balbianello, built for Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini in 1787, became famous in the twentieth century as a filming location and, later, as a FAI (Italian National Trust) property — but this card captures it in its private, golden-age glory, when wealthy European travelers would arrive by steam launch and ascend exactly these steps. Printed in Italy, the card bears the "El Extra 103" stamp box, a mark associated with quality Italian chromolithograph production of the early twentieth century.
